A Trick of the Light
When Three Pines artist Clara Morrow's former friend is found dead in her garden, Chief Inspector Gamache finds the art world is one of shading and nuance, shadow and light. And even when facts are slowly exposed, it is no longer clear to Gamache and his team if what they've found is the truth, or simply a trick of the light.
The Beautiful Mystery
No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, where the monks have become world-famous for their glorious chants. But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Gamache. Before he can find the killer, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.
How the Light Gets In
As Christmas approaches, Chief Inspector Gamache travels to Three Pines as a favor to the bookshop owner, whose friend has gone missing—a friend who was once one of the most famous people in the world. With mounting crises in his own homicide department, Gamache finds himself not only investigating a murder, but also seeking refuge for himself and his still-loyal colleagues—if such a refuge exists.

I love these mysteries, thank you Louise Penny. The question always is, how will Dective Inspector Gamache, his second in command Beauvoir, and yes, the villagers of Three Pines solve the murder. More than the who-done-it, I love the eccentric villagers of Three Pines as well as the cops. Penny always manages to show us different sides of each character. My favorite book in this series is The Beautiful Mystery. It's a closed door mystery that takes place in a monestary out in the middle of a Canadian nowhere. I recommend reading all her books in this series in order. However, you don't have to read all her books in order. Penny does a good job giving new readers the back story behind the characters. So. relax and be prepared to finish each book in one sitting. Each one is a page turner.Product details

The Chief Inspector Gamache Series Books 79 Chief Inspector Gamache Novel edition by Louise Penny Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Louise Penny is a very talented author. There is at least one sentence in each book that I wish I would have uttered. This began in book one and continues through book 9. As the Chief Inspector and other repeating characters age as the books continue, the reader knows that this will end. I doubt that reading slower can ease the pain of a final chapter. Thank you Ms. Penny for such delight.
Already hooked on this series, I found this compilation of the next three books to be very engaging development of the main characters. Especially in "How the Light Gets In," the evolution of Inspector Beauvoir and Chief Inspector Gamache was particularly intense. The twist in the final few chapters was a surprise, but not outside the realm of the Chief Inspector's influence and personality -- it was really a climax of the main story line introduced in book 1. I do feel it is important to read the series in order to fully appreciate the backstory and evolution of all the characters in these books. I've already purchased and am reading the 10th book of the series and look forward to more.
I really enjoy this series. Louise Penny has created a quaint small town outside of Montreal and uses the same characters throughout this series. The Chief Inspector is detailed in his investigations while he gets to know the suspects. The are an easy read, some twists and turns in the story line as she walks you through crime solving. I am currently on book 7 and have enjoyed each one.
I love this series. I started with the 4th book and had to go back to read the series from book 1. I even reread book 4 so I would have the series in order. The books are full of psychology, philosophy and spirituality. I adore Inspector Gamashe. What an intelligent, kind and thoughtful gentleman! The relationship between Inspector Gamache and his wife is inspiring. Most of the other characters are quirky but likeable. I usually don't want any of them to be the murderer. Most of the time I can figure out fairly early whodunit, but not in these books.
Louis Penny is incredibly descriptive - I particularly enjoy her descriptions of various foods.
I wouldn't mind living in Three Pines. I'd have very interesting likeable neighbors.
I love how this author writes. The books are indeed fascinating from a murder mystery viewpoint, however, her observations of humanity, motivations and situational ethics are really what the stories are about. And her descriptions of the food always leave me hungry. The characters are deeply developed. This is a series worth reading and particularly in chronological/numerical order.
I absolutely loved all 3 books. Each one was very different from the others and each were very satisfying reads. Living in Vermont, I am very familiar with Montreal and the Eastern Townships which adds an additional dimension to the series. I am happily reading all these books in order of publication and look forward to many more to come. I particularly love the ongoing stories of the various recurring characters and how they fit within the plots of the different books.
I have read Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series thru # 9 so far. I think #1 thru #6 are must reads just because you learn to know and love the characters of the little hidden village of Three Pines in Canada. But #7 thru #9 are Penny's best writing yet, IMO. They are totally addictive, engrossing and very emotionally charged with laughter, love, comradery, fear, suspense, and finally release. Louise Penny is our Agatha Christie of today, even better.
