Yosemite National Park Deck National Parks Deck Edited 9781594853524 Books
Ever since Chronicle Books brought out their 'Hooked on Hiking' guides to Northern and Southern California publishers have been hoping to emulate their success by putting out guidebooks in the form of decks of cards. The concept is simple: hikers will probably only want to do 1-2 trails a day, so why cart along a whole book. It is much easier just to carry a card with a map and description. So one would think that a deck from Mountaineers Press and author Marc Soares would be a perfect companion to Yosemite. Unfortunately, this particular product comes up a little short. In brief, the deck offers 33 hikes in and around Yosemite National Park. Hikes are color coded by geographical region. Purple is for the Valley proper and points south; red extends to the north and blue continues out Tioga road and includes trails to the west of the park. I have no reservations about the selections per se, though some of them seem quite a ways removed from Yosemite such as the hikes off Hwy 108. I do have reservations about the difficulty ratings Soares assigns to the hikes. 18 mile backcountry hikes are not "moderate" in difficulty. But my main concern is with the structure of the cards. The maps do not include topographic features or scale. The size of the cards is larger than other decks of hiking cards and are less useful. Finally, a significant number of cards in the deck are park introductions. A small and inexepensive booklet would have been better (and less costly) for this portion of the product.
Yosemite certainly deserves the attention hiking guides lavish on it. It is a beautiful place. If you are enamored with the concept of hiking cards, this is a good product to purchase for a hiking book to the park. But it could have been better. Hopefully Mountaineer's Press will make a few design changes as they continue to explore this new publishing format.
